O assunto é atual, embora seja inverossímil e incomprovada a sua existência. Esta expressão "discos voadores" foi cunhada há 31 anos pela imprensa ao noticiar a visão de nove objetos em forma de disco voando sobre Mount Kenneth Arnold, no dia 24 de junho de 1947. Mais tarde criou-se uma expressão mais elástica - Objetos Voadores não Identificados ou OVNIs.

1. Os simples enganos. O relatório de 1969 (8.400 páginas) da Força Aérea dos EUA, que analisou 12.618 visões de OVNIs, afirma que 95 por cento dos relatos devem-se a "simples enganos de identificação de uma variedade incrível de fenômenos". Os tais objetos voadores foram confundidos com meteoros, relâmpagos em forma de bola, reflexões de holofotes nas nuvens, balões meteorológicos, foguetes e até com insetos que apresentam órgãos fosforescentes localizados na parte inferior dos segmentos abdominais (os pirilampos, também chamados vaga-lumes, as moscas de fogo).
2. Mistificações. Para ganhar dinheiro e notoriedade, ou para distrair a atenção da massa, milhares de pessoas estão prontas a abusar da credulidade alheia, com exageros ou mentiras bem elaboradas. Religiosos, políticos, vendedores e até cientistas estão sempre prontos a explorar esta mina que é a credulidade humana.
3. Alucinações. O indivíduo alucinado, isto é, privado temporariamente da razão, pode não estar mentindo quando afirma sem sombra de dúvida ter visto objetos voadores não identificados e seus tripulantes, mas isto não quer dizer obrigatoriamente que a visão seja real. Segundo o psiquiatra Jean Rosembaum, este é o caso do lenhador Travis Walton, que em 1975 teria sido levado para o interior de um OVNI, no Arizona, e visto "seres semelhantes a fetos desenvolvidos, de 1,50 m de altura mais ou menos, com cabeças carecas e ovais, e enormes olhos castanhos". Walton era fã de discos voadores e, pouco antes do incidente, dissera à mãe que, se algum dia fosse raptado por um aparelho destes, ela não se preocupasse, pois tudo terminaria bem. As alucinações podem ser provocadas por enfermidades mentais e por outros meios, inclusive a ingestão de drogas alucinógenas.
4. Projeções. O psicólogo suíço Kal Jung, falecido em 1961, acreditava que os OVNIs eram produtos da inteligência e imaginação do homem, "projeções do sub-consciente coletivo, trazidos à tona em tempo de "stress" ou coisa parecida". Aquilo que sempre foi história de quadrinhos e ficção científica tornou-se na mente do povo, estranha realidade.
No que diz respeito a fotografias de OVNIs, um artigo de Seleções informa que elas "têm sido identificadas como discos plásticos de brinquedo atirados ao ar, fotomontagens, objetos pendentes de fios, sujeira na lente da máquina e manchas de revelação". Ninguém ignora as possibilidades atuais da arte fotográfica, especialmente na fotomontagem.
Finalmente, concluímos: se em cada 100 casos de visões de OVNIs 95 não passam de simples enganos de identificação de uma variedade incrível de fenômenos, seria razoável acreditar na existência de tais objetos?
