"O gafanhoto de que se alimentava João Batista era o inseto saltador que se conhece hoje ou alguma planta com aquele nome?"
De acordo com o conciso Dicionário Bíblico, há, pelo menos, nove termos nos originais da Bíblia como designativos desse inseto. A passagem de Êxodo 10, referente à praga que se abateu sobre o Egito, está corretamente traduzida por gafanhoto como nós o conhecemos, ou seja, inseto saltador. Não havia nenhuma proibição bíblica de comê-los. (Conf. Lv 11.22.)
Era alimento apreciado desde os primitivos tempos. Eram assados ou secos ao sol, depois eram comidos como grãos tostados. Afirma-se que têm sabor de camarão.

"The grasshopper that ate John the Baptist was the jumper that is known today or any plant with that name?"
According to the Concise Bible Dictionary, there are at least nine terms in the Bible original as designators of this insect. The passage from Exodus 10, referring to the plague that befell Egypt, is correctly translated as grasshopper as we know, or jumper. There was no biblical prohibition to eat them. (Conf. Lev 11:22).
That food was appreciated since the earliest times. They were baked or dried in the sun after they were eaten as roasted grain. It is said that they taste like shrimp.
